My Introduction

About Me
I am currently teaching as Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Theory at The Ohio State University. I taught theory, aural skills, and keyboard at Anderson University in 2022-2023, having recently graduated in August 2022 with my PhD in music theory (with a related field in composition) at the University of North Texas. I have also completed degrees in music education and music theory at Indiana University. I have a broad background in music education, having taught both middle/high school and college. My music education degree provides me with practical knowledge for teaching all levels of music. My current position at Anderson University entails designing fresh course material every week and developing new perspectives on how to present a diverse curriculum.
Me as a Teacher
I am a compassionate, creative, and knowledgable mentor. My experience has equipped me with the know-how to create an engaging classroom environment with a growth-minded philosophy. My goal is to foster a positive classroom setting where students are actively involved in mastering learning objectives: writing, creating, and performing. I encourage improvisation in aural skills and composing in written theory. Active participation ensures that students are making new and personal connections with the music. Moreover, my growth-minded philosophy comes in the form of scaffolding and differentiated teaching—building on familiar knowledge and tailoring lessons to all learning styles.
My Teaching Style
I have learned how to differentiate teaching to accommodate diverse learning styles and have gained practical insight on what modes of instruction work best at a given time. For example, I have found that hands-on interaction with music is the best method to introduce and scaffold fundamental concepts. When fundamentals like rhythm and melody are introduced, they should be expressed in many ways—aurally, visually, and kinesthetically—in order to reach as many students as possible. My supervisors have continuously stated that my feedback is quick and accurate, and I regularly receive praise from former students stating how they have learned the most from my classes.
