My Introduction
About Me
I am an oboist and educator in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. I first earned my Bachelor in Music Performance from Moravian College, and then went on to complete a joint Master's degree at Brandeis University in Musicology and Women's and Gender Studies. My area of special interest is the lives and work of women composers throughout historical and contemporary contexts.
I have been teaching at the newly renamed Moravian University since 2011, guiding students in classroom and one-on-one settings with topics in oboe, reed making, aural skills, music theory, and music history.
Me as a Teacher
I believe that in order to be truly effective teachers must meet the needs of individual students. Whereas one student might need more structure, another might flourish off of more freedom to explore. As someone who personally struggled with music theory and aural skills when I was a student, I very much understand the frustrations, feelings of inadequacy, and lack of confidence that comes with not "getting" it right away. I can help show students the ways that helped things "click" for me, and how to build upon beginning skills to encourage more confidence in the future.
My Teaching Style
My teaching style varies depending on the student and the subject. In general, I believe that if students aren't enjoying the experience, they aren't going to learn anything. I believe in uplifting and encouraging, building upon small steps to larger and larger growth.
