About Me
I earned my Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, in Violin Performance with a strong emphasis in Chamber Music. I am Concertmaster of the Vallejo Symphony in California, and have toured the US with Bella Sorella and Europe with the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. I have taught Chamber Music at St. Mary's College of California, and San Francisco Conservatory of Music Summer Music West. I have worked with hundreds of students in private studio lessons, chamber ensembles, classrooms and orchestral coaching. In addition to being a violinist, I am a pianist, violist, arranger, and video editor. I also play the cello. Visit www.joyouslee.com for more info.
Me as a Teacher
I love seeing students light up when their efforts lead to discoveries in music and about themselves. I foster the highest level of musicianship and technical skill, always attempting to instill sensitivity and utmost respect for music and the arts. I am detail-oriented, open-minded, adaptable, versatile, empathetic and approachable. I have been teaching for 33 years and have taught successfully online continuously since 2020. My string students have been chosen for principal positions in orchestras including Concertmaster, Assistant Concertmaster, Principal 2nd, and Principal Viola. My piano students are often chosen to participate in ensembles, a result of having strong chamber music skills.
My Teaching Style
I meet students at their level of understanding and encourage progress in a positive way. I use analogies to make concepts relatable, and help students develop pattern recognition for quick learning and long-term memory retention. I can adapt to methods and materials students may already be using while integrating new ones. Students learn that practicing is fun by learning how to practice for results. By establishing a foundation of good technique, musicians can prevent or diminish the possibility of injury and allow for broader exploration of artistry in playing. This approach helps to develop awareness, assimilate the instrument with the body in a natural way, and lead to a deeper connection with both the instrument and the music. Some students study multiple instruments such as violin and piano simultaneously. I am able to tailor a curriculum for each student with no conflicting advice between the instruments. I often accompany students on either instrument as well, supplying early and constant exposure to playing chamber music, crucial to developing a well-rounded music experience.
