Me as a Teacher
As a teacher, my main goal is to help my students progress along whatever path they’re on. It’s important to let the student’s goals direct lessons, rather than having the same expectations for everyone. I select repertoire from composers with a variety of backgrounds, and make a concentrated effort to help amplify marginalized voices. I want to help students grow in their specific musical skills, as well as helping them develop as a person.
My Teaching Style
I adjust my teaching style to the student, to help them achieve their goals. My role is less of a lecturer and more of a coach or facilitator, helping students develop their skills so they can make their own decisions and become independent. Musically, I often use modeling to show students technical concepts, and I also help them problem-solve when they have challenges in repertoire. I emphasize concepts of wellness, to prevent injury and ensure positive mental health.
