Me as a Teacher
I have over 30 years of experience teaching students of all ages and levels. My education in Korea was focused on German and Austrian styles of piano playing. After I came to America, I explored French music by studying with French music specialists. I encourage creativity and problem-solving skills by asking students to come up with their interpretation of the music and add additional expression markings to the score. While some students may be hesitant to do so, I offer alternative options, including opposite ideas, to allow students to make their own decisions about how to approach the music.
My Teaching Style
My primary research interest lies in musicians' health, a new and emerging area of pedagogical concepts. My research focuses on promoting healthy practice habits, including exercises, and emphasizing proper posture and natural body alignment to prevent injuries. I have presented this topic multiple times at conferences; this research directly relates to my piano teaching. I emphasize natural ways of playing piano to maintain good posture and create different touches and sounds using body weight appropriately.
